Know the exact distance

One mile equals 1,609.344 meters. If your goal is 6:00, the average pace is 90 seconds per 402.336 meters. On a 400m track, an even-speed 400m split is about 1:29.5.

Break the race into parts

A mile requires both aerobic fitness and the ability to tolerate a hard final lap. Avoid running the first 200 meters at an unsustainable sprint; settle into a rhythm that makes sense for your current ability.

Interpret predictions cautiously

Converting a 5K time into a mile result uses an endurance model. Runners with different speed and endurance strengths can finish faster or slower than the model suggests.

Try it with your own numbers

Keep in mind

These examples illustrate calculations and general training ideas. Your ideal pace depends on fitness, recovery, health, terrain and conditions. Treat predictions as estimates rather than promises.
