Race pace has to be sustainable

A marathon covers 42.195 km (26.219 miles). A four-hour marathon requires roughly 9:09/mile or 5:41/km. A predictor based on a short race may be overly optimistic without marathon-specific preparation.

Train the surrounding skills

Long runs, consistent mileage, recovery and a practiced fueling plan matter alongside speed. Your long-run pace is generally not the same as your goal marathon pace; the purpose of the session matters.

Respect race-day conditions

Heat, hills and headwinds can change the effort needed for a given split. Consider a conservative opening and monitor perceived effort instead of treating your watch as an absolute command.

Keep in mind

These examples illustrate calculations and general training ideas. Your ideal pace depends on fitness, recovery, health, terrain and conditions. Treat predictions as estimates rather than promises.
