Start with a recent effort
A recent 5K race provides the strongest starting point. If you only have a mile or 10K result, a predictor can offer a rough goal, but those conversions assume suitable endurance and training.
Plan the opening kilometer
A 25:00 5K requires 5:00/km and approximately 8:03/mile. Going out 20 seconds faster over the first kilometer may make the final kilometer much harder. Begin close to planned effort and reassess after halfway.
Use effort as a backup
If the course is hilly or the weather is hot, treat goal splits as a reference. A controlled first half and a strong final kilometer can be better than chasing exact numbers on every hill.
Try it with your own numbers
Use the relevant calculator to turn these concepts into a pace, split or workout estimate.
Keep in mind
These examples illustrate calculations and general training ideas. Your ideal pace depends on fitness, recovery, health, terrain and conditions. Treat predictions as estimates rather than promises.
